Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
