Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
