In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
