The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
