2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Change Follows Poor Reception

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster unveiling last fall.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer vision.

The president stated that the team is now reimagining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the full content from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to continue.”

Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our audience.

The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. After some time of conversations, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and experience in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most well-known series in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in greeting him next week. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.

David

Experience of the Incoming Head

The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary reads. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, risks, and tests that shift every session. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and hope your group can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."

The game lacks an confirmed launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as production progresses.
